The recent WHO guidelines on meat consumption have caused a bit of a stir. It’s easy to understand why people get confused about all the information that is put their way regarding nutrition. let me clear this up for you.
This information is nothing new. Eat PROCESSED meats such as bacon sausages or processed ham increasing cancer risk – mainly bowel cancer. But the risk is minimal. What the research shows is that in the people who eat the most processed meat 65 out of 1000 people will get cancer, in the group that eat the lowest amount of processed meat 55 out of 1000 will get cancer. Now this is a small increase in risk but it is a positive association
When we consider red meat – it is not a positive association, it is more of maybe. Eating red meat such as steak and pork or lamb MIGHT increase cancer risk, but just breathing increases cancer risk.
Yes, you read that right. The pollution in the air will cause some people to develop cancer. So the risk from red meat is much lower than eating processed meat.
I certainly won’t be eating any different amount of red meat, and as i eat processed meat now and then, but not that often I don’t think this is a problem either.
Enjoy your steak….
